WHY COSTA RICA
Costa Rica is the
most incredible country. It is impossible here to characterize
everything that is so special here in Costa Rica. I am been here
for 6 years and it has literally changed my life. I truly feel
reborn in Costa Rica. Below are some anecdotal comments about
some of the highlights and questions from customers that you will find
here.
Health Care: Three years ago the United
Nations did an intensive study of the world’s health care
systems. Costa Rica was rated 35th in the world with
the United State curiously enough 36th. The cost of
health care is 10 to 20% of that in the United States. My wife
had surgery three years ago to remove three cysts remove from near her
ovary. The total costs for a U.S. trained surgeon and
anesthesiologist were $1270.00 and the hospitalization bill for two
days was $80.00. You will find the CIMA private hospital to be
better than 98% of the hospitals in the United States. When you
enter the emergency room for example, you will not be attended by an
intern but a fully licensed emergency room physician. There are
in addition, 5 or 6 specialist on duty should you require further
specialized attention. A good friend recently was taking a
medication for his skin problems that were a result of his surfing days
in California and had an infection. He was just so excited to
tell me of the great professional and humanitarian care that he
received there. He estimated that the cost would have been at
least $1500.00 in Sacramento California; the cost here was
$175.00. Several years ago I had some problems with one ear and
the specialist at “La Clínica Biblica”, another private
hospital, sent me across the street for further tests. The cost
quoted to me seemed a little high at $275.00 until I realized what it
involved. This was for a full cat scan with brand new
equipment. Not only did I not need to wait but this would have
cost at least $1500.00 in the United States.
Residency: The requirement for
residency for a “pensionado rentista” is to 1) have a clean police
record, 2) have a minimum income of $1,000 per month that can be
verified by an auditor or accountant in the U.S. and 3) present a
certified birth certificate. Once you are here, you need to be
here 90 consecutive days without leaving the country. You may
also receive residency by depositing $60,000 in a state bank. You
may become a Costa Rica citizen by various means including being
married to a Costa Rica citizen for a period of two years. By the
way, once you are a resident you have all the privileges of that of a
Costa Rica citizen with two exceptions: (1) You cannot run for
public office and (2) you cannot vote.
Friendly People: Recently the Costa Rica people
or “ticos” were recognized as the second friendliest in the world.
Cost of Living: Imagine property taxes of less
than $100.00 per year, fish of various varieties including marlin and
snapper for $1.25 per pound, lettuce for $.20 a head, a whole box of
tomatoes for $1.25, a monthly electric bill of $35.00 and a basic phone
bill of $5.00 per month.
